Very proud to announce my Genesis drop on Known Origin, entitled “Subconscious”. This piece was originally part of the “Wasteland” series, which combined 35mm film artifact photos (grainy, blurry, burned photos from either end of the scanned film roll) with digital drawings, and would have been Wasteland #5. However, the more I shaped the piece, I realized that it was a departure from the series and a unique item in itself, especially with the animation and music.
The theme of the piece is a depiction of the conscious and subconscious mind- the center filmstrip gradually moving through time represents the conscious mind, the mountain range in the middle represents the landscape of our consciousness, which is filled with rain which represents mental chatter and various sensations and emotions that arise on a moment to moment basis. The background, a 35mm film picture, represents the grainy forms of the subconscious mind, and the lightning strikes are flashes of insight that reverberate throughout both regions.
As a jazz musician of 25 years, I have gradually making plans on how to integrate my musical and visual sides in the NFT realm, and for this piece, I asked my closest musical colleague Junyoung Song to record a soundtrack to go along with the timing of the lightning strikes. Layered over this, I put cassette tape recorder noise (I run an lofi indie label here in Korea) to simulate the sound of rain, and also slipped in bits of duo recordings from Junyoung and myself, from alternate takes of a duo album we had released earlier this year.
As a lover of meditation and a practitioner of holistic medicine, I am fascinated with the role of the subconscious when it comes to artistic inspiration and find that most of my flashes of artistic insight come from times when my conscious and subconscious mind are well connected- in particular, dream or hypnagogic states. As such, the apex lightning strike at ~00:17 seconds resonates in both regions and especially the subconscious, signalling that regions role in facilitating insight.
